Magnesium fluoride is white powder crystal or shows light grey or red for industrial product because of foreign matter in it. It is uneasy to resolve in nitric acid or water or alcohol,and shows weak violet fluorescence. Its melting point is 1263℃，density 3.14， and heat of formation 263.5 kcal per gram mole.
It is mainly used as additives in Al electrolyte,as flux in producing ceramics and in glass and Mg metallurgy,as coating of optical instrument lens and filter, as fluorescent materials of cathode-ray tube, as ant-ireflection agent of optical lens,as welding agent and as coated agent of titanium pigment.
